In visiting with an old farmer the other day (95 years old) the topic of when conditions were right to plant corn. He said his Dad always said if you could drop your pants and set on the ground for 10 minutes and still feel your butt it was time to plant.
My corns it the ground for this year so maybe its an option for next year.Iron Rose

April 25, 2010 at 9:16 pm #59615MatthewParticipantI was always told your corn should be knee high by the fourth of july. I live in Connecticut so that maybe only works for similar climates. Further south the corn almost looks like you could chop it by july.

Or if you are going organic bury a thermometer at seed depth and plant when soil temperature is 57+
Neither method assures that a killing frost won’t get it given the wild extreme swings weather has taken lately. They are calling for frost and freeze here for the next two days. Glad I don’t have anything above ground yet.
