Hey there, Leslie! Have you sold your McCormick mower? If not, could you send a pic or two? I’d be very interested in that, or possibly one of the other mowers if you still have it/them.

Thanks for getting back to me, Grey! The 2nd and 3rd implements have handles, the 2nd one has about an 12″ diameter wheel, the 3rd one has about a 6″ diameter wheel, a bit wider than the 2nd implement’s wheel, just like I’ve seen on other walking plows.
As far as the plow, I didn’t even think about how I would set the share… like I said, total newbie :0)

Thanks for posting this! Just got back from the auction, made out great, and had a blast. They’re having another one on August 23rd (I think) and I’ll be back for more delicious chicken barbeque and a few more bits of equipment. Again, thanks for sharing this!

Thank you so much, what a thoughtful reply! I keep hearing that d-rings are the way to go, but it’s hard to find one to actually touch and fool with, and I worry about being able to fit it properly. When you say it was hard to get a good working fit, could you go into more detail? I particularly worry about the bit of the tugs that runs from the hames to the girth, it doesn’t look too adjustable.

yes, we will be adding another horse in the near future, but he is surprisingly tough to match, being a plain bay pony of no particular breeding.
And I forgot about farmer Brown’s plow shop, I should get in touch with him! I bet he knows who to go to! Thanks for that reminder!

sorry to hijack if i am, but can anyone explain the advantages of this setup to me? I’ve never seen it before, and am intrigued, I’d love to know why it’s prefereable(or not) to the usual yoke arrangement. Thanks!

hooray, somebody else working the little guys! We’ve got a 13.3 grade sort of drafty-pony type, and there’s at least a few other folks on here with haflingers and other small drafts. I look forward to learning along with you! Welcome from the other “newbie”.

I wish there was old hardwood under our carpeting. The kitchen is a random smattering of cruddy linoleum and mysteriously new subflooring, and the rest of the floors seem to be covered in lead paint, perfect for my 2yr old son to be in constant contact with… uggh. Still, it’s getting to the point with the kitchen carpeting(yes, i said *kitchen* carpeting… gggglaaaghghghgggg and/or bbblarrrghhh!) that it has got to go. The kid threw a dozen eggs of the counter the other day and, well, you can guess the rest. Ugh.

I live in just about 1000 sq ft of house(our second floor isn’t habitable, but it would bring the total up to a whopping 13-1400sq ft when we finally get the $$ to fix it up)… and into this little home we squish me, hubby, kid 1, kiddo 2 is on the way, plus 3-4 dogs, 2 cats, the occasional injured fowl, and all the houseguests who can stand the ruckus on a regular basis. The downside is we have no bedroom(we sleep in the living room with kid 1 and the dogs and all) so social time with friends is tricky when we need to put the kid to bed. The upside is it keeps us all very polite, and also with the woodstove cranking in the winter we can heat this place to 85 degrees on the worst and windiest days without burning a whole lot of fuel. The other downside is of course that over the life of the house, many decisions were made regarding additions and renovations that we would have done very differently, and living with someone else’s mistakes is really tough sometimes. I do long to build our own house and make our own mistakes sometimes!
I grew up in a three story victorian house in Philadelphia, and I can say that I never really want a big house like that again. It was never warm/cool, maintenance was never done, and it was never clean, and we all felt like roomates more than family, rattling around in the house like a few peas in a bucket.
We have friends who are finally moving into their yurt that they’ve been building, and truthfully I think if this old farmhouse fell down(some days i wish it would!) i think we’d shack up in the barn for a while and put up a yurt in its place. Think of all the time I’d save on cleaning!

Me too, but Google Image Search is wonderful for that sort of thing.

That was very helpful, thank you! But it doesn;t look like it would be terribly efficient for snow plowing, does it? I mean, you have to dump it all the time, and of course looks like you need both hands to operate… hmm. There’s so many ways to go about things sometimes it just boggles the mind!:D

wow, how cool! I like how small they are, they look easy for a short-stack like me to be around 😀 I had often thought of yaks for fiber(I’m also a weaver and a spinner when I’m not up to something in the barn or field) but I didn’t really think about “yak-ox”… hmmm, maybe I can talk the husband into them after all…

this is a really interesting topic, plowing snow with the horse… do you have any other pictures of your plow, Leslie? It’s one of the things I thought we could do with Tank to keep him in condition over the winter, but I couldn’t quite figure out how to do it. I didn’t really want to try figuring out a backblade for him, being that he’s small, but if your Milt can do it, i feel like Tank probably can, too, especially since our driveway is pretty short.
Anyway, any more pics of your snow plow setup would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
