bivol,
what is the function of the wooden Y-sticks with the yarn/rags in between each team?the sticks are used to attack the yokes. they are in fact wooden nails that go in the hole in the middle of the yoke, and fix it to the angle of the pull (hence i call them “fixed angle yokes”). what are the rags for? hm, don’t know.
i do know that there besides rags, also bent saplings, acting as wooden ropes, to hold the nail and yoke together.
now, note that it has that wooden stick in the middle. it is for hitching the implements, like a wagon tongue (they also have a hole in the middle), and also to keep the constant angle of the neck seat to the line of draft.
bivolParticipantthank you all, thought it’d be a gem the moment i saw it!
the spades were still used in all kinds of plows here right up the start of the mechanization, it’s like a little iron shovel to scrape extra dirt of the plank with.
this is a truly medieval design of the plow, and these guys were full-time farmers do they knew all the tricks to plow with this type of plow.
it’s funny, and i wouldn’t believe it if i didn’t see it, how easily and cleanly this plow cuts and throws the soil aside! it slices like a hot knife thorough butter! and the oxen are no pushover as well, this vid is the only vid i saw castrated oxen do mock fighting!
and does anyone notice this team is not so much slower than a horse team with a walking plow? in some places i dare say they are almost equal in speed to a walking horse team(like in 12:00?)
i know they talked about re-heating an re-knapping the plowshare (as one does with an ax) so it’s sharp for the season.
also, in 14:40 the man holding that veritcal stick is like a rudder, he’s helping to steer and keep the plow on track.it’s also funny how easy this plow is directed (or, well adjusted), compare to recent plowings here, where the plowman bends and pushes the plow down…
i wonder does that field bare any resemblance to medieval England before the Enclosure act in 1801.?
if anyone has any questions, do ask, maybe these guys already talked about it, so i can tell you!
bivolParticipantno prob Tim, we have lodging, a small stone house on the Adriatic coast!
unfortunately we have only a small flat here in Zagreb (we’re fixing the “small” part so we expect to be more flexible now in terms of lodging soon), but if you come during summer, you’ll get the most of both Mediterranean Croatia and inland Croatia!
+ i know where they keep the “goodies” – rare and endangered breeds of domestic animals! one guy i know even breeds busa cattle!
so, if you’d like to drop by, by all means!
ofcurse, this invitation is also for anyone of the crew here who can come down here during summer!:)

Pffft! CENTRAL Europe? That’s no good! The western islands are much better 😀
thanks Nat! i’ll have that in mind, and while in Holland, guess i’ll make a skip over the channel (under it actually) while in the neighborhood!
oh man, i’ll become a wandering student this summer!:D
seriously, i’ll have to make a travel plan Croatia-Germany-Netherlands-Britain-Croatia for this summer.
how it started, i’ll end up in Michigan, US!
bivolParticipantthank you! i’ll keep that in mind!
after all the exams finish, in 7.th month, then i’ll be free to travel. but i’ll let you know the details few weeks before!
this summer then! 😀
bivolParticipantWHOOO, NICE PLOWIN’, JOHN!
those are nice horses, and the scenery is awesome, too! Scotland preeety!:)
if one has to plow, it’s better done in a nice scenery…
bivolParticipantoh, that’s what i needed, thanks Geoff!!
John, don’t worry, i think the army knows to keep its troops away from damage it can avoid. and this damage it CAN avoid! japan is the best equiped country to deal with this sort of crisis, and i dont think it needs any foreign help near anywhere dangerous.
personally prefer to laugh it out – the situation in the neighborhood is not pretty – we have a nuclear waste depo (open type) in the middle of the capital city where we live, whole neighboring Serbia is radiated (and still operates fine), and we have an old obsolete soviet “ready-to-blow” nuclear power plant some maybe 200 kilometers north, in Hungary (all we need is a Homer Simpson!)
oh, and another one just up the stream in Slovenia……AND we’re on an earthquake prone territory.
(+ we’ve already been glowed up a bit in ’86. (didn’t help much though)…)should we sulk?
…why not laugh about it instead?
so, thanks, Geoff made my day!
bivolParticipantthanks!:D
i’m glad you like it, this is one rare vid!
too bad i can’t sub it!
bivolParticipantit could well be love!:D
or at least a good friendship! cattle are known of having friends, either with other cattle or with other species
friendship is a relationship in which tho animalas (or people) are together for reasons other than calculation (mutual benefit), in other words, they hang around because they like each other.
and i don’t see it couldn’t be – teamsters KNOW when their animals like or dislike them, so why wouldn0t it be possible for animals to like other animals?
and it’s very possible t is love! i don’t see why the concept of love would be endemic to people!
bivolParticipantThank you!
then i’ll have no option but to come by:D
the pictures look great, i can’t wait to take a drive!Elke, thank you for the date of the gathering! it must be newer, i looked for it a few months ago and it wasn’t there. i hope i’ll be able to go!
so i hope i’ll have no exams, autumn exam season, then! i have to speed it up!
right!… Wolfgang, since it is possible that i will have some exams left and so there is a possibility that i will not be able to go to Kommern in the autumn, i’ll let you know so i can drop by on a visit in some other time, like during summer – being an animal science student i’d like to learn everything useful i can learn, and that includes farm chores, too!
so, if it happens i’ll have trouble with exams (i’ll know that in early summer, so i’ll tell you beforehand) then i’ll tell you so we arrange for a different time for visit, like in summer.
i’m flexible.but i hope that i’ll be able to go!

horse owners living off public welfare?? 0.0how is this possible?
aside from rare breed conservation, i see no possibility how this could be possible!.. state should support those who can’t work or don’t have the means to live. but if they can support 10 horses and do nothing, how come that Der Vater Staat don’t see that?:eek:i come from a (sayz in d so caled “Conztitushn of Croaisia” that we’re a social state *pfff, yeah right*), so i’m reeealy curios…
wow no wonder Germany was voted as the most desirable location in the world to live in (poll held in europe)…
Europe – from a fortress to a dungeon! LOL we made progress!:D
bivolParticipantok then!
honestly i thought of bringing a suitable gift when visiting, so i’m glad we’re thinking of the same!:D
oh yeah, i’m thinking of making a visit to central europe, i’ll go to my aunt’s in netherlands, and to germany, to Kommern, so i guess i’ll drop by then!
thanks!

do you have trouble with neighbours or horse owners?
EU may not be perfect, and we’re not looking forward to going in, but at least i think it’ll get some balkanians back in line… historically foreign rule was the only effective thing…
