I’ve never seen this done either.Doesn’t sound like a very good set up to me.I would put an evener in there. JMHO

carl nyParticipantNice team,How much you charge to ship a couple 100% mares to up-state New York….LOL My son has a 50% Brabant stud and a grade mare. His FIL has a team of 75% mares. Beautiful horses.
carl nyParticipantActually the main reason for the off set is so that a single horse will track in the same track as a team.Keeps them on the packed trail in the snow so they don’t have to pack a new trail in the center. My mother told me that her first horse was a “city horse”. He didn’t know enough to stay up on the packet trail,he went into the center and fell and broke the fill’s on her sleigh the first time she took him home. She lived on Tug Hill in N.Y. and they didn’t plow the roads in those days. That was about 1920 or so. HTH

PS; I guess Mark beat me to the punch,I type with two fingers…LOL….. I never saw his post the first time around.
carl nyParticipantYou could put a pole on that one horse and use your two.hard to tell what “small riding horse” is.do you know the breed and how tall, pic’s. would be good. Lowville is south-east of Watertown on route 12.
carl ny
carl nyParticipantThe best thing would be if someone could post a pic. so you could see it.I don’t have any sidebackers.the chain(or strap) and snap should be somewhere’s around 10″ long,I think.Been a long time since I used one.
carl ny
carl nyParticipantYou did the right thing..

as long as your mare is in shape you can work her lightly right up until she foals. We raked hay with my sons mare two days before she foaled. I know that in the “old days” they used to stop the team, unhitch, let her have the foal, give it time to nurse, and then hook up and go again. Those horses were in shape of course, worked every day. don’t do that if your horse is only worked lightly once a week.carl ny
carl nyParticipantThe little yokes are called “baby yokes”(maybe a regional term),they look kinda like a backward evener. They are used with a harness with side backers.Side backer should be adjusted just like the belly backers,so the britchen is just a little loose when the tugs are tight.Belly backers are the ones that go under the belly to the martingale and use just the single yoke. the little chains on the side backers are just to hold everything in place. carl nyParticipantI don’t know how big these guys are or the build so it’s hard to tell.Mowing would be the hardest thing you mentioned, you wouldn’t want much over a 4ft. bar.As far as the other stuff, you have to load to the size of your horses.I’ve seen a mini pull two people in a cart,as long as it was good going. HTH
carl ny
P.S. Are you right in Rochester or where? I live outside of Lowville,N.Y. ,if you know where that is.About 150 from you.
carl nyParticipantYou can do a lot with smaller horses.Same as you can do with big ones only on a smaller scale.I use to have a team of 13.3 draft ponies and you would be surprised.
carl ny
carl nyParticipantTo bad it wasn’t trained to drive….Would make one hell of an ox(draft bovine). LOL
carl ny
carl nyParticipantYup, turn that tire around. Other then that, looks good. Had a hard time convincing a guy about that one time. He couldn’t understand the concept of the ground driving the tire. LOL
carl ny
carl nyParticipantSafest place you can be is in the seat.
carl ny
carl nyParticipantLucky,VERY LUCKY !!!!!!!! Turned out ok but could have been bad.
carl ny
carl nyParticipantI would attach them to the runners the same way they are attached to the wagon. You might have to manufacture some brackets.
