I have a friend with a csa that wasn’t happy with organic matter in her soil so she bought some manure solids from a large dairy with a digester. I’m working on her to use horses I keep telling her I have harnesses that will fit her quarter horses. Eli
EliParticipantI hope to have some input by fall but I’m pretty we will use our old curly mare to cultivate. I think my hafi/QH team may run down the whole garden. Love all the research and can’t wait for the next book. Eli
EliParticipantI have made dry hay as long as I can remember and ith all about moisture. I have a moisture probe if I question the moisture at all I bale a few bales and test them. It can be done without but if you are new or unsure it’s a valuable tool. Eli
EliParticipantVery nice my brother is in the process of building a sawmill shed but he wants a cordwood building. So we are in the process of cutting cedar for the walls. I have always loved sawmills if my brother didn’t have one I would. What size tractor will you run it with? Great job cool mill. Eli
EliParticipantWhere you located and pics would be great. My goal is to have a team of Suffolk horses. I always have trouble posting pictures here. Hate to say it but it keeps me away from this forum. Eli
EliParticipantI am interested do you have any pictures?
EliParticipantI had to go home from school to find the pigs once I could have used a border.
EliParticipantIf the alfalfa is four inches tall don’t cut it as it is just starting to build root reserves never cut alfalfa unless it is just starting to bud or dormant from a good freeze. If it is for horses I would wait untill it is 50% flowered. If it was mine I would let it unless you need the feed. It is hard to smother I like to have 12 inches of alfalfa to catch the the snow and stick up through any ice that may form
EliParticipantRed locktite may pull the threads out it if you have to remove the bolts. If the threads are stripped some times you can cheat in a fine thread bolt as a temporary fix did this on a few bolts over the years with good results. Eli
EliParticipantI use blue locktite on my Harley exhaust bolts with good success if that’s any help.
EliParticipantI don’t know if she plans to take this further than a summer job but if she does she will need to get out and learn the skills needed to take it to the next level. Be it tech school or apprenticeship. We have a friend who is in the second year of her csa we have been talking to and getting advice from and plan to visit a few farmers markets. But I agree people need to get out and see how the rest of the world does it. Thanks Eli
EliParticipantStephen I used mostly parts from an old spring tooth harrow I had lying around and left over stuff from other projects. The ground I am working is in back of our pond I am trying to smooth it out to plant hay. I have been disking cultimulching and picking stones. I plan to plow it in the next few days disk it and use the cultimulcher to prep it for seeding.
Building things I can use is one of my hobbies. When I built the cultimulcher I didn’t have horses to pull it. I tell my wife and kids when I’m gone have an auction then haul the rest in for scrap. EliEliParticipanthere is a pic of my home made unit

I have also been reclaiming some ground behind my pond it works well but tends to press the quack roots back in and keep them growing but then it’s a cultimulcher not a quack digger.
EliParticipantDonn have sandy loam soil that plows easy. I need to learn how to use 3 horses I am fixing up a 3 horse evener and hope to try it soon. Thanks
