any more pictures of neck yoke?
j.l.holtParticipantyes I agree. but will they adjust enough? just something I check everytime I go with new collars
j.l.holtParticipantNext question for me to ask is if you up grade your collar and pad set,,will the hames still fit,or will you need to scare a new set of those as well ?
j.l.holtParticipantIf collars are that hard to get, you might want to hunt up a adjustable style. then as time goes on or new horse comes on the farm, it could be fit for them.
j.l.holtParticipantdo you want or need to use a pad under..if so, thick or thin pad? also what style collar are you looking for?
new or used or rebuilt?
j.l.holtParticipantLike I say of all my adventures,,,”that aint no story, thats the truth”.
j.l.holtParticipantscratches often comes from damp skin, irritated by a scrape that gets a small skin infection. as a rash grows we see it and treat. keep clean and dry and stop before mites start using it for a moisture supply. had a lot of mite problems when I had free running chickens. even the penned rabbits had them. anti-biotic skin creams are a good place to start..have had good results with strong Listerine mouthwash. what ever you use, or where you start, you will need to clipper the hair off, clean and keep dry.
j.l.holtj.l.holtParticipantSeen this chewing thing time on driving horse..Owner never could figure out why and put a piece of fancie chrome chain on end of lines. Horse did not like chewing the chain and after a while gave it up. Might be a last resort for you.
j.l.holtParticipantHave used truck inner tube and duct tape with great results for treating foot problems like this for years. Where ever I went to work, I could always find one if I did not have one with.
j.l.holtParticipantused to use a tree with a wide crotch.we called it a sweet water drag. cut the limbs and pull from the trunk. if need be load some wood cross wise to stand on or help push snow down into trail.
j.l.holtParticipantwalk him with a inner tube. Epsom salts ok. good in a couple days. trim off all over hanging hoof or sole.
j.l.holtParticipantone thing ,,or two things to think about buying three point hitch tools. if the horse thing just don’t work, you will have them bought for the small tractor. and, if you live long enough to reach ‘old age’ when you retire the horses, the tools will be there and you will not have to buy them and have a big investment.
j.l.holtParticipantI realize I don’t have the experience that most of you on here have, but I could feel any change in the horses mind set through his leg. Rewarding them for standing still is a good way to get there attention.
With that said, after 30 yrs. under horses, I’ll use the stocks for the heavy guys. Anything to save on a tired back helps. and they still learn to stand.j.l.holtParticipantmy brother had a ground cable skidder fix this way. had to power it with a old dozer to get the power and control needed. a truck axel seemed to travel to fast if I remember right. also ran out of power with more than three med.sized logs.
j.l.holtParticipantif you keep cutting back the toe wall, and it gets close to the white line, you have taken all the strength away from the hoof in that area. if the horse is powerful. or really gets it on while excided, he coulod split the hoof wall and you would have a horse with to toes like a cow….then what…
