Pretty impressive what the ancients managed. I have often wondered about those stones too and read somewhere that perhaps earth banks were built up on one side then when all the top stones were in place the soil was removed… would be easier than trying to hoist them mabey…

Geoff if you have ever combined linseed or flax as its also known you would see how hemp would make good rope. that stuff winds up real tight and is super strong..

Mine are all straight bar and had no probs.. I personally think the jointed bits can be harder on the horses mouth than the straight bar in the wrong hands due to the nut cracker action…

One slight disadvantage with liverpools over the military bit is when they are used with a team.. the cross checks tend to pull the circle into the inside of the jaw. I got some stainless wire in the mig welder and fixed the inside port solid. Then I got the military bits which dont have the big circles of the liverpool… In the days of the royal mail stage coach in Britain the bottom slot on a 3 slot liverpool was known as “the duffers hole”…. A book written by Max Pape of Germany in the 1930s on coach driving maintained that the cross checks should be buckled to the shank which stopped the bit being twisted into the jaw…

We use the military bit which buckles the lines behind the horses mouth. Same basic idea as the liverpool. Donn I read your article in the SFJ and it works well….

Sorry George I thought you meant it was ripping the heart.. Cutting the “toes” off at the sides was another move that helped with it tearing at the hinge…

Hi George sometimes I did a bore cut from the front or the hinge side and that way the fibres are cut clean before the back cut goes in..

Wow this is a great site guys !!! thanks for all the imput.. the stanley are along the same price as the aga and rayburn stoves… mega dear. Shipping mite not be a big issue as I know a guy that brings in antique tractors and will ship it for me.. cost me $800 to ship over our new plow so this may be an option. All the stoves other than the ones above that we get over here are made in China and to be honest are rubbish…

Hi Donn.. the plow has a tongue. I think i may try the mares again as I have set the plow up in the barn. The kv bottom is supposed to be the easiest to pull. Will the side draft be bad enuf to cause sores do you think? Really wet here so mite be a week or so before we get it back in the field…

Matt I have been reading this gasification post and last night I was on the Elmira cookstove site. They have an antique type stove that I really liked… anyway the one next to the one i liked had an optional extra gas burner. Could this be fired up with the unburnt gasses from the stove.. or is it not that simple ???..

Hi Ed, thats a real nice little spreader. You are way braver than me coz I wouldnt trust mine to stand if they were unsure of something. Im ok loading hay or something I can get the lines in a hurry but I personally wouldnt do the tractor thing unless someone was at the heads… The big fella seems to be figuring it out for himself tho. His attitude seemed to get calmer as the film went on.. best regards and stay safe….
