My take is a bit simpler.. The whole system we have in the western world is pretty much non sustainable.. we depend on other countries working to produce goods cheaper than our own markets can. Like it or not our percieved wealth is built on other folk working for peanuts.. if we were to pay the going rate for a shirt to be made by an American or a UK worker then we couldnt afford it !so our standard of living drops.. simple. Once every developing nation in the world decides they want the same rate of pay as the west , then what ??? as for the “green ” label, that has been hyjacked by big industry as a money spinner and nothing else.. Our country has a chain called Tesco who recently had an ad campaign about how they sourced locally produced meat for example and how they cut carbon emmissions… well good for them but I would have felt better if they had shut the f*c% up about it and just did it.. John
jacParticipantJeez… just goes to show the power of clever advertising Michael.. thanks for posting this..
JohnjacParticipantMike Im taking it that you have a 2 wheeled hitch cart.. Im wondering how they cope with the weight on the 3 point linkage ?.. I am slowly comming round to the idea of a powered cart.. John
jacParticipantMike I had a gelding doing something similar, tho mabey not so pronounced.. Turned out his upper molars had wore down overlapping the lowers and this created a hook on the uppers.. was my own fault because we had been feeding out of hay nets and because this raises their head it means their jaw effectivly becomes overshot …. all get fed on the floor now.. best regards .. I remember grandfather and one of my uncles being away most of the summer clipping sheep round the area and then for a day they all decended on our farm to clip our sheep.. hay time saw a gang of retired miners round the table.. these were very much a social event and some great times were had.. that seems to have died out with that generation.. John
jacParticipantExcellent !!! that is the 1st time I have seen that type of tedder working.. Liked the horse. good steady farm horse. The material looks quite short ? I can imagine your tedder working really well with slighty longer material.. Thanks for posting this.
JohnjacParticipantOver here some of the hilly areas have a big problem with encroaching Bracken and these rollers work really well on this by crushing the stem..
JohnjacParticipantI like the idea of a dedicated hitch cart too Mitch but its back to this {and a lot of other} old horsemans problem.. lack of money. A good tractor mounted mower is around $1000 over here and then id have to build the hitch cart with the engine.. someday for sure but for now I will have to settle for the small engine. best regards
JohnjacParticipantMatt I figured on one of the belts being on a tensioner that could be pulled out of drive with a lever.. That 600hp combine I was on in the summer was driven mostly with belts so I recon a mower shoul be no probs.. thank everyone for the imput…
JohnjacParticipantThanks for the response guys.. I had thought of a full on powered hitch cart but dont really use enough machines that need that power. If 3hp is enough then the weight is drasticaly reduced.. A couple of reductions with drive belts might be enough to reduce it to 600rpm ???..
JohnjacParticipantHi Ethan.. We run Clydes at presant… You might find if you make up longer coupling lines and punch coresponding new holes furher up on the long line so you still have that 4 to 7 inch difference between the two lines. I dont do a lot of ground driving but did notice this problem any time I did.. good luck..
JohnjacParticipantI hear you on this one Geoff… I think its fairly easy with the likes of tractors and trucks to get a cost per hour but horses open a new bag of monkeys.. what makes it worse is the fact we horsemen tend to put up with a lot more because the horses are part of the family usually.. going to be interesting to hear from you guys.. John
jacParticipantBeen away a while and just getting bak in the groove guys so I a bit late in on this one… we have a gelding that seems to choke on his feed when its mixed with soaked beet pulp.. did it twice now and both times it was if there was beet pulp in there. I put it down to the fact it seemed to make the mix sort of doughy.. donno but the rest are ok with it…
JohnjacParticipantI dont think that model was popular over here .. they seemed to go straight from binders to the self propeled combine.. the A C Gleaner was fairly popular.. be good to see it all coupled up Donn. how much hp does it take to turn a small combine ?? 30 ??…. some of the stats for the new machines are awesome.. 600hp.. 18tons when empty !!.. 9 ton grain tank.. 40ft headers.. nearly a ton a minute in wheat.. 90 second discharge on auger… and £400,000 price tags :)..
JohnjacParticipantHi … sorry I been so long replying but was in Oxfordshire for a while driving a combine. Thanks for the kind offer and I’ll give you a call soon once we get all the wee jobs caught up with.. hows that mare comming on.. best regards .
