I was going to AI my sows this month but the cost of shipping was prohibitive. I will AI in the future to bring stronger blood into pure bred sows to get some gilts, but for $100 in shipping and $100 for the semen I wanted, I can feed a boar.

Mark where are you located? my friend has a 3 year old hereford boar that he needs to move. We are in cambridge ny, right over the boarder from bennington VT.

Ha Ha, I forgot that was on there. My wife gets jealous that I always have scheduled breedings for all of the animals on lists and calenders…. Its all part of how the farm keeps going i guess.

I have a college education through a masters, and I had to take out loans and pay for everything myself. As much as it sounds nice to wipe away my debt I don’t think this is a good idea.
Farming is like any other small business and it should be subject to the same economic pressures. For the people that have a hard work ethic and a strong desire they will figure out how to make it work. College debt is just another personal piece of the pie.

James Kunstler is one of our customers, it is our community that inspired his books and attitude. I think if you would like to get him to write more about horses Carl will have to send all of the extra offer horses over here and I will get Jim on the lines,

    Fun post guys

Im in the same boat as Carl, My dad had a horse trader friend who would give us leads on cheap horses and we would go pick em up. It never really mattered if the horse was broke or not they all get treated the same way under our care. I sold my last haflinger to a friend and now Im keeping my eyes peeled for some cheap project “full size” drafts. Its even harder on the farm to try and place a $ value on a horse because if it is going to make me money it has to be cheap from the start.

Good luck Carl and if the offers start rolling in heavy you can send some of those project horses over here to NY.

Larry Newcombe is a friend of mine and he has a nice coming percheron gelding. it isnt exactly what you are looking for but Larry is a great trainer and he is very trust worthy. If you call and talk to him he will be straightforward with you if it will work for your situation.

Hi Carl, I live just over the border in Cambridge NY. I have been keeping my ears peeled since I saw your add, have you had any luck finding a horse?

Taking responsibility for hardships is often too easy for a working man. You are also responsible for all of the good that you have imparted on the the world around you. Dwell on the good, keep your head up, and know that most of us have been there. You are not alone and your positive achievements are what matter to us.

I always wondered why this wasnt done more, what would the draw back be to having hold chains? They always made sense to me?

Thanks Don, If I get some time to go over we will try a normal 3 abreast setup. Any opinions on what order to put the animals in? Haflinger in the middle? From my experience with these animals they will do whatever we ask as long as we are patient. I have never worked with Donks but I am really starting to like them, they are more like dogs than horses….

Yeh that is kind of what I figured.
Do you think the size of the stud matters if you use AI? Do you run into tough births?

    Thanks

That was my thinking. I have friends with morgan mares, and I also like the old style morgan horses as riding and cart horses. I know I can get a nice sound mare for a good price and I was thinking towards the future on if I could breed her to get a couple of draftier horses out of her.

    Thanks

I thought so too but these evolved from horse drawn models. Check out the picture I referenced in the SFJ.
