My vet offers euthanasia for dogs and cats in the practice for free, though that means traveling to them for the most part. My horse vet would come to the farm to do it. Its very quick, having had to do it many times for an old friend. I would bet they could find a vet to come out to the house for them.

I love it, Ed! When do you want to take it for a test drive? My place or yours?
jen judkinsParticipantHey, Mitch and Ed, I love both your stories (and glad you are OK Earl :o). I have been in both situations before…similar at least. I find that moment of understanding between me and a horse to be just about the finest sensation. As you said, Ed, it makes me want to work with them more and more…
jen judkinsParticipantCount me in, Jay. Do you need another team? Sounds like fun.
jen judkinsParticipantI wholeheartedly agree…about the neighbors. There is no way I could run my place with a full time job off the farm without neighbors to call on occasionally for help. When the horses are loose, someone always rounds them up. When my does birthing went bad a neighbor was there in a matter of minutes to lend a hand. When I had to put my old QH down, a neighbor was over with his backhoe within the hour. When I go out of town one of the neighbors kids mucks stalls for me and feeds the horses. The list goes on and on…I am very lucky and grateful. Glad your old guy is OK.
jen judkinsParticipantTim, I finally got a chance to look at your video. I love the easy way you two work together….its a thing of beauty! I’m glad Will is settling in as a single so well. A testament to your partnership.

I would be very interested in what Phil has to say, but I wonder if it would be best to get Carl and Geoff together initially to see if it is technically possible first, then figure out the rest with the Comm Comm.
Carl has no interest in helping us. Geoff and I can vet him for now. More after the holiday.
jen judkinsParticipantI have spent some more time on the phone with Phil Wilson and am getting a little excited about his proposal. I’d like to give him 30 minutes of our time on the 2nd if that is acceptable to you all. He can get excited about little programming modules or techniques, but I warned him you all would not necessarily appreciate all that detail, so I have asked him to focus on three points:
1. Why should we consider changing our platform for our websites?
2. How would it work? for ex., Can all our threads and posts from DAP.com be brought over to the new site?
3. What’s in it for him? What are the costs? Both up front and down the road (monetarily or other). Are you all interested in this? I realize, I am the only member of the website comm. I would also like to invite Geoff and Carl for his presentation. If you all think this will take up too much time for our Comm Comm meeting, I could set up a separate meeting with him, Jean, Carl and Geoff, and simply do a preliminary evaluation and I can report back in Feb or by email. Let me know how you want to proceed? Thank. J
jen judkinsParticipantI like Jan 2nd as well as the first Monday idea.

A good well trained horse, is a good well trained horse regardless of what they were bred for. Though I would not want a big hitchy horse, I think many of them can become good work horses if we give them the opportunity. Just my thoughts.
Truer words were never spoken. Coming from my saddle horse background, I have always believed in cross training my horses, so that they do anything I consider appropriate for them. That said, some horses’ bodies are just better suited to certain jobs.
I have one of those big hitchy horses. I did not choose him, he chose me….long unrelated story. When in the woods skidding logs, I frequently find myself thinking….’boy he sure isn’t designed for this sort of work, but he certainly LOOKS GOOD, doing it!’. Seriously, he’s the best horse I have known and very versatile. He rides, drives single and double and as a single I frequently drive him without blinders. Of course, if I had been in the position to pick my team, I would have passed on him. I guess what I am saying, is, pick a nice horse…one you like and feel comfortable with. If you pay attention, you will know the horse or team when you see them or lay hands on the lines. Horses are extremely adaptable and surprise me all the time with what they are capable of. Good Luck.
