Thank you, I know there are a few pony people around here as well and I am trying to network with them. out of the 12 shetlans I have 1 has ever been driven or saddled so it is a bit of an up hill battle. Some seem to take the bit but act like they may have had bad experiances in the past…. time to go back to basics again with everyone and start from the ground up… I am currently trying to sart one team at a time so the progress will likely be slow going. The 5 year old mare I am starting is really getting the ground driving and bitting down. I will probably try to pair her up with my largest stallion, 11 hands and 450 pound range. as they match pretty well.

Or even better woud be if the scientists found out it wasn’t the cows and livestock contributing to global warming, but the TAR on all those lovely city streets….. wouldn’t that burn some politicians backside to find out just how little the country contributes versus the Corvette and blacktop at his or her McMansion….
Just some ramblings from a vermont hill billy,

I was wondering if anyone had ever used a ring staff? I have seen bulls with rings and know of several people that say to ring them if they are starting to get snotty, but how many people actually have a bull staff to make the ring an effective tool?

The only thing that I can say is that the wagon gear you are looking at has one large flaw. The steering linkage is very weak. I modified the one I have and use around the farm with my 4 wheeler. If you would like to see the gear befor you buy one let me know. I am not all that far from you. I was thinking that mine could be used with little modification with a small team of ponies.

Erika, Be wary of FSA loans they are alot harder to deal with than you might imagine. We barrowed money from them for some expansion here on my dad’s farm and we have never had so much oversight from any other lender. They want to be your only lending angency and are very tight with their purse strings. To the point that they have to be where ever you are wanting to buy somthing so they can inspect your purchess before they will write a check even though you are paying on a loan for that money.
This is one experiance that I would not like to relive and it may be diffrent for others. from my prospective they are not an ideal lending agency though each person may have a diffrent experiance and I would love to hear of some others.

Would you think that a NH 310 would be a good choice to use with horses? I know of one for sale that looks brand new. The only thing that I can find wrong with it is that the thrower belt is partially unlaced. I currently have Belgians though I am looking for suffolks.

noting that you just got your corn planted and are organic have you thought of interseeding instead of the traditional cultivation? we have been planting lidino clover inbetween the rows of our corn and have noted two advantages. first it fixes nitrogen and second it gives us better pasture after the fall harvest.

we have 2 truss arch buildings on our farm one is a 40 X 96 that covers our composting manure storage facility and a 60 X 90 that is a composting bedded pac for our dairy cattle. They are a truss type construcion and have akita covers with a 20 year warranty. Time will tell if they are a smart choice or not… The covers seem to be quite durable and if properly tensioned they should last.

you could try the coulters that you can buy from tractor supply co. they might work because they just hook to the plow frame with a u bolt. Another option would be coulters that are intended for a 1 or 2 bottom plow form john deere most of the ones that I have seen are optional on the newer plows and are a bolt on type utilizing a u bolt type bracket.
