J-L, the one on my old #7 was complete enough for a pattern. Will it work for you? Let me know and I’ll throw it in the next time I’m heading your way.
Lingodog13ParticipantLooks good! Almost as pretty as mine, in fact. Took mine out for a spin tonight and it sure is a smooth pulling unit. I’m not going to post pictures til I’ve got the braces on, though. And I second the Thanks to Lost Farmer!
Lingodog13ParticipantNow you’ve got me curious–who do you have in your 3? Did you make them draw straws?
Lingodog13ParticipantThanks for that. I’ll have to seek out a copy of his work.
Lingodog13ParticipantThe video “Harnessed to the Plough” by Farming Press, with Paul Heiney and Roger and Cheryl Clark was filmed in East Anglia. It has quite a bit of beautiful footage of ploughing there and explains the layout system they used. You can get copies of this through Diamond Bay Books, or you can request it through your library. I know that my library sends their copy of the video all over the U.S. Hope this helps.
Lingodog13ParticipantI’ve noticed when searching “Horse Drawn” on ebay that a lot of the items it pulls up are toys. I believe they’re out of Britain, but haven’t investigated closely enough to tell. Good luck.
Lingodog13ParticipantJ-L, that was most certainly NOT directed at you! There are people who come to the library though, and I know just the book they want/need, but don’t want to lend them my copy. This is one of these books that I think of as essential. If I like and trust you I’m almost compelled to share my collection–whether you really wanted to read them or not!
Lingodog13ParticipantI love that book too, enough so that I whined until the local library bought one for its collection and I don’t have to lend my copy out.
Lingodog13ParticipantJen,
I sell a few lambs direct to local folks here, and the way I stay legal is to sell them on the hoof, and then either help them butcher “their own animal” on our place, or put them in touch with another local guy who will do a custom and Inspected job for them. I won’t sell half, or butcher for them as that could lead to legal trouble eventually. Most of the people I sell to butcher on the spot and take the carcass home to cut and wrap.Lingodog13ParticipantMy harness is the Yankee or Mormon britchin type, and it needs a crupper to keep everything right.
Lingodog13ParticipantThanks for posting that Kari. I was hoping you would. I like your comparison to both working and breeding a stud.
Lingodog13ParticipantHi Grey,
If you haven’t yet seen “Harnessed to the Plough” and “First Steps to the Furrow” you are in for a treat. They are produced by Farming Press out of Britain, and have pretty good shots the saddle, among other things. Both are availabe for purchase, but you can also get them through your library (Inter Library loan).Lingodog13ParticipantNow Lostfarmer, how can I take a picture of myself with the lines when I’m also the one with the camera?
What you can’t see in the pictures (because I missed the shot) is the forecart’s wheels leaving the ground as the team pulls that top bale from the stack. Pretty exciting to me, but J-L and the team handled it no sweat. Keep after him to post the missing pictures of the hooks as he should have them by tomorrow.Lingodog13ParticipantKari,
Tell your daughter to be careful, these long bitter winters can warp you! I ended up an English major because of them. When I think about it, Hell is a frozen place in my mind, too. Stay warm up there.Lingodog13ParticipantIt’s good to have you here Kari. I was hoping you might migrate this way.
