I got a old end loader tire, any large off road tire would work, cut two hols in the face of it and loop a chain around hook the evener on there and sit on the in side. works awesome! not only does it groom, it also is a great working tool.

I paid 400 for a Case #5, he had it set up to use on a tractor but didn’t get to use it, he also put new knives and guards on it. I just had to make a new pole and the steel rod that the evener hooks on to, goes to the front part of the sickle bar, don’t know what its called.

Take your time and shop around, there are a lot of people that put a huge price tag on them and they sell them as a yard piece and think people won’t use them to mow anymore.

I know where there was a MC No 9 with rubber tires and they guy wanted close to a grand, tires were rotten and needed work. I was there to pick up a JD 2 bottom plow, and by the time I was leaving he was down to 300, I kind of wish I would have bought it now.

another thing I wanted to ask if it would be smart for me to start working with the BLM or USFS land? or other state or county land? or is it a big head ache?

I’ve changed a few things with the hames as far as adjustments, I have to really pull on the strap super hard and lean in to the horse when I’m putting the hame strap on or else I have to get it as tight as i can, work her, stop tighten it up some more.

Is it safe to oil the collars heavy? I didn’t know if you oil them too much if they would loose their form.

    Hey Brad,

I understand a lot of what your saying, I already own a John Deere 70 and I would be able to get a cable mounted on the back, its just not a real loader friendly tractor it is also only 2wd.

I ended up getting that team of percherons a few weeks back, guy had no more hay and couldnt afford to feed them, We agreed on a price and I gave him some down and took the horses and I am really happy with them and I’m glad he didn’t feed them a little bit and made them starve just to get by till spring. They are in great shape just need hooves trimmed. They are going to be an amazing team and I’m looking forward to working them, they fit right in with my belgian mare and can really pull. I don’t think I’ll use my team of geldings for any sort of logging work. one reason is they are really big and hard to see, and they are really big and hard to move around. really dopey at times.

I’m really trying to get on a someone’s site, I have a friend north of me but being we have so much snow and we keep getting snow its been slowing his work up. I went for a walk in my parents woods the other day and the snow was up to my hips, and I’m 6ft.

If I got a skid steer I think it would be down the road and I would just ask to rent my parents. Dad has a new holland LX565 and it has 950 factory hrs, I thought about buying that from him but I would really like to have a 2 speed and a enclosed cab but if he would give me a good deal I think I would find my self having a hard time turning it down.

I personally have a few things I want to get in line before I start trying to get jobs, one thing is I’d like to get a good saw, I have a Jonsered 2050 turbo but It was my grandpas and I really wouldn’t want to take it in the woods and use it every day because of sentimental value, I would be very upset if anything happened with that saw. I also want to spend some time on a landing. There is a guy looking for some land to be logged about 2 hours away from me, one is 3.6 ac clear cut pulp, I wouldn’t make any money at it, and the other is a 80 of hard wood, I assume its quality sticks. I’m planning on working for the guy I’m working for now part time because its a large farm and only doing some things around there, and I hope that would give me enough time to go start up my own logging.

the really only thing that is make me second guess my self is not really knowing personally how the mill expects things and I don’t want to start a job and have it all messed up and then come out to be the land owners expense because of my screw up.

Found out my issue I think the guy ibgotbtheses collars Grimm had then laying on a shelf like the would go on a horse, hame side up, and I looked at them close today, the top of the collar has a nice wide groove and as it goes to the bottoms it gets really narrow so I’m assuming the collar is deformed alittle, I got a shorter strap and tighten up more and more as I’m working them and its seems to be making a groove again, I’m gonna put the hames on them when I’m done and try to get then to make a wider groove again.

I can put three fingers in a row between her neck and the collar, this is the way all my collars are and I’ve never had any issues in theses photos I was starting to unharness her and she only had stuff on the front side to get undone yet so the collar looks like it was rocked forward a bit. I get the hames on the collar tight but I think part of the issue is in the strap I’m using because It seems to get loose after I buckle it. I’m gonna harness them up again tonight if I’m not at work too late tonight and see what happens.

    Hey Carl,
When you get in deep snow like that where you go every few feet do you ever have your horses just go when they are ready? My first team was like that tk a point

This week its supposed to hit 30 finally after it has been sub zero for many days so I think the snow will finally get packy. I had the one team out with just the bob sled on it and it was a little tough for them cause its close to a half mile go to the woods
