Fin hames not made in sweden anymore as far as i know. this is why i use sugar valley pulling collars.

We are no different in that we have walked woods 200 miles from home and did not even get the job, i really think it is a case of touting for work and being nervous to charge in case we put off the woodland owners.
simon lenihanParticipantwe have been working on HRH prince of wales estate for several months now and it was sujjested recently that we hold a horselogging event [seeing is believing ] in october of this year. We would try and showcase as much modern equipment as possible at this event. This in my opinion would be a good final couple of days for our friends across the water. However i thought it would be a good idea if the group were to start their trip in the south of the uk taking in the suffolk punch museum, holsley bay stud, several world heritage sites, crossing in to wales and finally up to scotland. If the group then wished to go to sweden they could fly from prestwick airport [ 40 min ] away. I am also sure our swedish friends would put on a good show. I would welcome your feedback and it would be good to get numbers [ approx ] that would come.

scandinavian sledges were in the most part designed for the single horse, however it is no big deal to convert to a pole for a team. i agree that a pole will assist braking but it is not really necessary as there is a sledge designed to cover most terrain and slopes. Picture 1 is of a sledge i owned many years ago, this was a super piece of kit and believe me i had it on slopes greater than 15 degrees, on steep slopes i would load with the light end on the bunk with the butt end acting as a brake. The wheels had several adjustments to raise or lower the sledge, where the wheels lost contact with the ground the skids took over. The whole unit was hinged at the bunk so we had complete articulation.
Pic 2. This is the bergan wheel sledge, this is a sledge for serious slopes and this sledge has a trailer attachment for total suspension. The braking system on this sledge is simple and has been around for yonks. When the sledge starts to run, the runners push down on the crossbeam pushing the end of the shafts into the ground. It is my opinion that all sledges should have wheels of some size to assist the horse, better again if the wheels can be removed when working on snow or mud. Its like scoots on bare round every time i see one i think how much better and efficent these would be with wheels on. If you can increase your load size by even 5% every trip out of the woods with wheeled equipment it sure adds up at the end of the year. I always thought that the d-ring harness was adopted from the swedish harness. We know there was alot of immigration from sweden to america during the late 1800s and as carl has said if one happened to be a harness maker.

simonsimon lenihanParticipantThis piece of kit work very well and i have seen it working and was very impressed. The first impression when looking at the wire crane is that it will tip over easy, this is not the case. Loaded with 4 or 5 average size logs first it then becomes very stable and can then load logs up to 2000lb. In picture 6 clockwise, directly under the honda engine you will see where the hydraulic ram goes [ removed to be repaired from this model ] this will lock up the frame which is really necessary. The ackman front axle will travel over everything while maintaining a level load in the bunk. It was mentioned in another post about working steep slopes, well this piece of kit makes the job alot easier. In can be used in conjunction with a sky line, snatch block to good efect. It can be fitted with a trailer for farm use, its down to ones imagination what can be achieved with this piece of kit.
