I have been installing fence for 15 years and every fence has its good points and faults. Really it comes down to either budget or aesthetics. Almost every fence if properly installed will serve its purpose. I have put up a lot of tape or rope and does work well. I would strongly urge strong wooden fence along busy roads as there is less chance of the horses going through it. hopefully this is helpful. If you have any questions you can drop me an e-mail at alicharjas @yahoo.com
vthorseloggerParticipantHello, I am interested in your saw. Is the chainsaw mill for sale as well?
Thanks for your time,
TravisvthorseloggerParticipantIt has been quite warm. I have been working in the woods in a t-shirt for at least a week. I cut a soft maple in Chester Vt on wednesday and the buds were opening into leaves already. My two Belgians say it is warm, they are starting to shed out and it is just the beginning of February. Hopefully if winter is almost over mud season will be short and sweet! There is a lot to do to get ready for summer!
vthorseloggerParticipantWe had extremely good luck with the farriers formula that is a pellet form supplement that you put in the food once a day. The hooves of our two Belgians were horrible when we got them and our farrier recommended it to us. There was a big difference in the hoof by the next trimming. we didn’t feed the recommended amount and still had great success. Good luck.
vthorseloggerParticipantI know that feeling!! I bought my first team a couple years ago and haven’t looked back! This is a great source of info with great people to help however they can!! congrats!
vthorseloggerParticipantNice video. I wonder if they took the game of logging. The guy running the saw never kept his thumb wrapped under the handle. That is a big no no. If kick back occurs you don’t have enough control of the saw to stop it and a serious injury can happen. good video to watch though.
vthorseloggerParticipantThanks for getting it straightened out. Without this site a lot of us new to the animal power people would be lost. This site and its members are a real asset to us. I am very appreciative to be able to be a member of this elite group. Keep up the good work. Thanks again, Travis
vthorseloggerParticipantI am going to make it work one way or another. I don’t quit and am very stubborn. One of my old bosses used to call me mule. I appreciate all the info and support. It is great to here from other people that have been there and that are still doing it.
vthorseloggerParticipantThe 365 is a good saw. I have a 372 that I love. They are not cheap but have made a living with mine for a few years now and it hasn’t let me down yet. you can call GKS. They are suppliers for logging and would probably have a good price.
vthorseloggerParticipantOut of curiosity did anyone that is logging with horses write a business plan for logging with horses or did most of you just go for it?
vthorseloggerParticipantThanks for all the responses. I see where it depends on the area and what is in demand. I guess the big benefit for me is the diversity of the horses. I have worked beside dozers and skidders and still work with one skidder logger from time to time. After driving a team of horses for the first time in the spring of 09 I knew this was the direction I wanted to go. I also have a wide variety of interests such as Christmas trees and pumpkin patches and a market garden. We have had some success with raising meat chickens and I would love to raise some pigs. I guess my future goals would be a horse powered farm with logging be as much of a daily routine as the chores. I have found that some people I approach about horse logging seem more open to the idea of doing a great job and not so much on profit. Once again I feel privileged to be a part of this group and all the knowledge here is better than any library could ever be. Thanks again for all the help!
vthorseloggerParticipantThe tire on the end of the axle certainly won’t have an 8 foot circumference. I have seen the ground drive forcarts that are 2-speed. They seem to work pretty well. I was just thinking it could get better or find better ranges for things to work with more ranges to work them in. I am just a beginner at the whole horse thing and fabricating for horses. I was into building trucks before. Then I drove my first team of horses and it has been all over since then!
vthorseloggerParticipantYou think the transmission would be to much? I was thinking it would be an advantage other than the extra weight. The rearend I have came out of a one ton truck so I think the gear ratio is at least 4.10 to 1. Also those old transmissions shifted pretty easy on the fly so you could adjust pto speed with out starting and stopping I would think.
vthorseloggerParticipantThe pics are great! Do you know if anyone has made a blueprint of sorts for a scoot like this?
vthorseloggerParticipantDo they hold this event every year? I would really love to attend but am unable to get out of my duties around here in order to get away.
