I was picking my Belgians feet today and noticed his frog on his rear foot has separated from the sole at the pointy end near the front of the foot. What would cause that and should I trim it off? It is a big flap of stuff just hanging there. I am unsure what to do.

    Any help is appreciated.

Ed, horses shed their frogs from time to time…. If he is not limping I wouldn’t worry. I would also not trim it…….

Thank you Carl. I had not seen that before. I just wanted to make sure it was not going to interfere with his mobility. It does not appear to bother him.

I have always heard that horses don’t shed their frogs unless there is a fungal infection involved – AKA thrush. I trim all flaps because flaps trap junk underneath them and can lead to infection.
