    Great as always anne 😉

I used to jump with Angus, but he hates it. Loves climbing, hates jumping. He would rather clamber over a jump and trash it than leap! 😀

My other, the brown swiss, did enjoy it and it was difficult keeping him in!

At the moment mine are still growing so it’s no problem, but in future if I can’t up their work during peak grass growth (although it’s a busy tim with haymaking etc. and we do plan to use the lads for that – I would probably put them in the paddock just behind the milking cows as we rotate every day and the cows get the best stuff – they can clean up.

Yeah I’m a fanatic, although a very dwarfed one as there’s not much of a PBR ‘scene’ in the UK – animal rights activists would be all over it like a rash….

I love to see how athletic bovines can be, and I used to think it cruel without knowing anything about it, but american friends persuaded me to watch it and I saw how calm the bulls were in the chute, and how relaxed they are once the rider’s off and they run off out of the arena…or do a victory lap – you can see some are proud of themselves (or angry if they lose!). They also live long, pampered lives; I’d rather be a PBR bull than a feedlot animal!

If all goes wrong for me here in britain I’d love to run off to america and breed bucking bulls! LOL

Yeah had I known I would hate riding in stirrups so much I would have saved myself some cash and got a bareback pad instead! I have found the saddle works it’s way forward, so a crupper is next on the shopping list! 😀 You live and learn!

I just use a headcollar on Ang, and the reins aren’t used for steering very much (unless I need a huge turn), just a goad and leg cues are fine for him 🙂

    Hi Jac,

I don’t know anyone up there doing it myself, but she’s welcome to come down here (York) and do an ‘ox experience day’ I’m setting up to do over summer – http://www.oxtopia.co.uk (site isn’t totally finished yet, I’m working on it) – My big lad is not AN angus but he is called Angus! I also have an Ayrshire who is an absolute dream, and lots of other calves to mess around with – feeding, haltering etc. I don’t do the traditional yoke thing though, if she’s interested in historical accuracy I’m not your woman! 😀 I ride them and have a few acres to ride/pack/drag things around and have a nice picnic etc. We’re still waiting on our forecart so unfortunately I can’t use real implements yet.

As far as working AAs goes…I’ve never heard of it working. The only person I know who started an AAx had to give up because he got too aggressive – she’s switched to hereford now and is getting much better results. Peraps if you could track down some of the SUPER rare ORIGINAL population Angus’, that would have been used for draught, you may have a chance?

Sounds like a nice idea – donkeys are my next bet if the government end up killing my ox (there’s a lot of government culling going on and you never know who’s next). It’d break my heart and I don’t think I could start new cattle all over again 🙁 I’ve worked with donkeys and found them to be that bit smarter than horses, more akin to the oxen.

Can I ask though, do they *need* a bit? I work my oxen without and there’s people out there who have bitless horses…..

Saddle arrived yesterday! Can’t ride in it yet as I’m waiting for some stirrups etc. but I tried it on him and it seemed to fit pretty snug! It’s absolutely light as a feather and so soft – just like a cushion. I’m not sure I’ll need extra padding at the moment, given how little riding we do and how well it fits. There is attachments for a crupper.

Maybe some oxen are less dominant by nature.

Undoubtedly, like I say we have steers of all breeds up to 4yrs and beyond, and the bulls are unquestionably always top dog – never have a problem. Only with the ones that keep their testicles for some reason! 😀

Lake Ngami arrived – big book! Looks excellent, only had a skim so far but looks like plenty of information about the oxen: names etc. 🙂

Camels have always been very interesting to me but they are few and far between in the UK and well out of my price range – they are fascinating, incredible creatures, I saw a TV programme recently and they showed a saudi camel stud with all different colours – even black!
