Great film and thanks for sharing this.. It almost becomes hypnotic… John
jacParticipantGreat post Ed.. It is nice when your horses still try to please even though there is a problem they cant speak to us about and we have missed. I think this shows a huge ammount of trust on the animals part. Thanks for sharing… John
jacParticipantyea the Russian draft looks pretty cool but getting breeding stock from there would be nigh on impossible.. some of the swedish drafts are mistaken for swedish arrdenes.. will keep you all up to date when we … thats me an Simon bloody Lenihan 🙂 … coz he made me see the light haha…get a couple of mares sorted out..John
jacParticipantWay to go Scott !!! and a happy Christmas to you all from this side of the puddle … John
jacParticipantThe saying “show horses can work ” is mabey a bit off the mark in the UK… there are so many weakness’s bred into the Clyde and Shire now.. an 18.2 and 19 hand horse is ok for shows.. there feet are hopeless now.. the feather is a pain in the butt in muddy conditions and only a victorian idea anyway.. CPL is rife because of lax breeding standards.. I read somewhere that the Percheron has a windpipe now that is too small for the size of horse.. the Suffolk is so in bred now they are in real danger of losing the breed.. this is all on the back of the show ring. I can see how a market for the show ring drives people to breed but over here the societies dont give a rats ass for work types and anyone with a Clyde of 16.2 always finds themselves at the bottom of the line… taking a show horse to work is totaly possible , but the height might bring its own problems.. good luck and I will be keen to see the fotos… John
jacParticipantJust like to add to what John said an that most hitch horses for the show ring are way too tall for practical work with regards draft angle…16.2 is reconed to be the optimum height…. just my take on it…good luck with it …… John
jacParticipantThanks to you both Mitch an Erika..I am puting together a trip to Sweden in January. Simon Lenihan is looking to buy a mare so we will try and get 2.. will keep you all posted with fotos hopefully..John
jacParticipantIts like Jen said John…. CPL really needs a dry climate and the way this weather is changing we are in for more wet summers as well as winters and that just makes it worse.. it really is breaking me up to let them go but watching good horses go down with it after the age of 10 or 12 is just too much.. funnily the black strain seem to show the least symptoms.. old Tyde has virtually no sign and he is 20 plus !! go figure… John
jacParticipantThanks Jen.. will keep you all posted.. Marshall its good to hear you again.. yea its sure going to be a wrench to say good by.. the Swedish draft is not common over here but the British breed societies have wasted most of our draft horses thru indescriminate breeding for years.. europe on the other hand has a rigid series of tests for breeding stock which revolves round actually doing work.. britain has no such regime.. John
jacParticipantOn the bowline issue George I usually double the rope up if I know its going to be a hard pull.. can usually get it out ..works for me…

JohnjacParticipantMy old Albion mower has two pole positions.. about an 8″ offset.. closer to the cutter for mowing hay and away from the cutter for reaping wheat or barley …. John
jacParticipantNone of the British built mower’s were enclosed until the tractor pulled ones arrived.. or least im pretty sure on that, but as usual i may be wrong.. as Mac says.. well set up mowers of either design work well..
