I have built up a section of wall with PT 4X4s and home made metal supports for PT4X4X~30″ that stick out from the wall. I’ve got 5 supports that look a lot like massive saddle racks, and I hang the entire harness on them, britching out. They’re about 3″ higher than my shoulder so that I can slide my arm under britching all the way up to hames and pull harness off at one time. Collars hang above and bridles below. It’s worked out great for me. MAybe I can get some pictures.

George, thanks for the info and questions. I might be next in line behind you for a bobsled from this maker. Let me know when you go up and maybe I could join you?
    Thanks

This is my first winter with shoes on the team and I am VERY glad for it. It’s amazing the confidence they get with the suds, and now when the rest of the herd is slipping around the barnyard (is anybody’s yard not ice?) my guys are moving easier, which makes me sleep easier with less concern of an injury. It’s just not nice out in the wood or pastures right now.
As for time, I went six weeks the first time and didn’t even have enough growth to require loppers. We just trimmed frog and sole, rasped the bottom, and rasped toe after resetting shoes. We’re trying for 10 weeks this time after I saw how good the feet looked when the shoes came off last time.
Now, I probably don’t get as much use out of my team as a lot of folks, so shoe wear shouldn’t be a problem. I may and up going 8 or 9 weeks instead of 10. We’ll see what March looks like and how feet go.

Here’s the updated summer schedule for Longview Farm. I’d love to have a lot of DAPnet turnout at these events, and can prep them to suit our needs- whatever people want to practice. Here’s what’s just now going out.

Mark your calendars folks! More events have been planned for the summer:
    May 26-28th: Barn Raising
June 16: Trail work day & BBQ
July 7th: Wood Bee for Ted and Nancy Walker
July 21st: Trail work day & BBQ
August 11th: Trail work day & BBQ

We hope to see you all out here enjoying the beautiful weather! More details to come.

Not directly related to Maine, but an interesting read. As a potential young farmer targeting local markets, I hope to see this impact grow.

Ok, I will prove that I am a girl. What is a beetle and what do you do with it? It looks like a mallet with forged metal on the ends.

You’re basically right. It is an oversized mallet used for encouraging timbers to go where you’d like during construction. The metal rings are there to prevent splitting from traveling the length of the head and rendering the things useless. They are actually set back on the head a bit, so that the contact surface is wood. As it’s used, any splits will curl bac over the rings.

I’ve been called out to a few of these when working for the animal hospital. It’s never fun and they never seem to be in an easy place to work, and then of course the trouble with machines and such. I’m glad you and yours made it out ok.

One thing that works really slick for supporting horses in any situation is old fire hose. Give yourself a laugh by asking your local fire department where you get find “Old hose.” I’ve found a million ways to use this stuff, but it’s great for lifting/ supporting horses.

We had an awesome time this weekend. Thank you all, especially Brad for the venue and all for the advice/tools and experience.
Jean, I am really hoping I can get a couple of pictures from you. I’d like to print 116 if I could.
    Thanks

I’m glad I didn’t read this while drinking my coffee!

    How to fix it?

I’d love to practice working with the sled if it’s available.

George, If you bring your scoot down, could I use it? Mine doesn’t fit in the trailer with the team and I’d love for them to get some more practice pulling logs.
    See you Saturday,
