This is not from personal experience, but from what I have read. A rider on the horse driving the horse while the other person runs the cultivator helps. I hope to be putting this theory to the test cultivating our corn this year!

Scott I am willing to help out in any way that I can. My husband is a diesel powered logger. Though he experiences many of the same hurdles that the animal powered loggers do. He is a small one man operation that battles with weather, no markets and expenses exceeding the income. Majority of his work is timber stand improvements. So, if you need me to provide market or insight from this point of view we can do that.

Unfortunately, it is snowing like crazy in the Champlain Valley. I knew all this warm sunny weather was a “test” from Mother Nature. One should never get too comfortable with a good weather pattern. It sounds like it will be near 75 degrees again on Saturday! Hopefully this snow kills off some of those black flies! :p

Don’t the old timers call this late snow, Poor Man’s Fertilizer?

We have a small (15+) highland herd, but we are located in Vermont. I have been raising highlands since 2001. My husband said no way!!! My father bought me my first 4 for Mothers Day in 2001. We have had as many as 35, but now that my father has passed away I have scaled back some. We had a white highland bull born on the farm yesterday. I have pictures of the calf/mother/father….if you are interest in coming to Vermont.

I remember when I hitched my team up to the ground driven tedder for the first time…..When we started off and that old tedder was click-clacking behind us, it wasn’t pretty for a little while. The old worn out leather harness that came with the horses broke and then I didn’t have control of one horse. One thought he had the green light and the other one knew I wanted them to stand while I cleaned out my underwear!!! 😮

I was encouraged by a friend to continue. He rigged up my broken harness and I ended up tedding hay until dark that night. If anyone has worked with horses, they have been in your shoes last night a time or two….

Jean, my guess would have been from my personal experience….when my team is point in the homeward direction they “suddenly” develop a renewed level of get up and go.

Good luck with the colt Suffolk prospect. My neighbor traveled abroad to obtain her current team of brabrant mares. She had them shipped back to the US, and has had great luck with them. They are HUGE chunks of horse flesh!!!

I ran out to Paris Farmers Union at lunchtime and bought the 1/2″x1/2″ rabbit cage wire. We will give this a try. If it doesn’t work, I will just blame Jen!:D

If I am brave enough, I will post a picture in the next couple of weeks of the end product.

Jen ~ keep me on the short list for a couple of ducks if you end up with any hatched out this year.

Good to hear from you. I have a lead on a 8 burner commercial stove for your outdoor kitchen. Sounds like the right price…I will find out more this weekend and keep you posted!

I use stall mats for my horses. I don’t have a fancy barn set up at all. I use one end of an old dairy barn as an run in/out for my horses. I have decided to use the stall mats because we have a concrete floor in the barn. I put shavings or hay chaff on the mats but nothing thick, just a layer. My horses go barefoot so my mats are still in great shape.

I agree with the recommendation of Brighter Planet. They are just a couple of doors down from my office in Middlebury, VT.
