I should have sent the photo’s weeks ago, but you know how it goes. Thanks for bugging me.
All of the people who put the Field Days together worked very hard. You must be just getting rested up. I will look forward to the newsletter.
Regards,
RobinRobinParticipantI think most people had a great time. All of the folks I spoke with were impressed with the
event. I did not get to all the workshops as my interest was with the oxen programs.
As you know Nick & I volunteered a good amount of our time doing signage and kitchen help plus wherever needed. There was lots to be done on Friday.
The workshops I attended were very impressive.
The committee in charge did a fabulous job of putting this event together. It is not an easy task.
I thought the potluck was a little sparse Perhaps in the future folks could tell in advance what they plan to bring.
The Saturday evening dinner was not up to expectations Some pasta, meatballs, chicken, veggie platter, fruit platter, stew etc. would have added to the menu. the guests were asked for $10-20 donation. It really left something to be desired. Next time will be better, I”m sure.
On the other hand, Sunday breakfast was a feast in itself. Nothing was left out. There was a crowd. Folks who came in late still had several choices.
I do know how much effort, planning, cost, planning, contacting vendors, presenters. planning, last minute details, planning, cost, cost, cost, are involved in these events, then try to correct any last minute details. Been there, done that.
I just hope I was helpful for your event. Yes, I know I am a member but too far away to attend regular meetings.Anyone who was thinking of attending this event but did not, really missed a valuable education.
The weather was perfect, folks were friendly, lots to see and do.
Nick & I got back home in the Goshen, NY area around 9:30PM on Sunday. It was 6-7 hr trip. We hope everyone else got home safe.
I will send photos in a day or so.
We are having the Hudson Valley Draft Horse Corn Harvest next Saturday, Oct. 5,at the Saunderskill Farm, 5100 Route 209, Accord, NY 12404, should anyone be interested. It will be different from the DAP event, since we have more suburban/city folks attending. Everyone is welcome to see what we do.
Thanks for the opportunity to be part of the event.
RobinRobinParticipantI missed the last post. I was in NJ today, some short gas lines. Some stations still closed due to electric power outage. NYC is starting gas rationing (odd/even thing) tomorrow. Rockland County is limiting gas purchases to 10 gallons. So far, Orange County, NY is OK. We had folks come to our house for showers and resupply gas tanks and containers last weekend. Power is still out in some places. Lots of trees down en-route to NJ today, road were passable. I did see several out of state utility trucks along the way, including a convoy with police escort. Lets hope everyone gets power back on soon.
Some are predicting power out until Thanksgiving. That’s a long time to be cold. Take care everyone! RobinRobinParticipantOur round bales are 4×4. They stayed on the ground, the shed flipped over. We spent Tues & wed. taking the metal sides off, then the wind picked up. Dan secured the shed as it was tossing like a boat in water. He strapped the frame to a tree on one side and to the paddock fence on the other side. So far, so good.
Frank & Jesse were very concerned when this thing was blowing from side to side. Jed & grey could care less.
Hope everyone survived the storms.
RobinRobinParticipantNJ Farmer, how are the relief efforts going? I know there are lots of donations being sent, but enough, enough volunteers to hand them out? Enough soup kitchens, etc.? I know folks were without power for 9 days, some still out, then the snow last night.
I did donate some pet food, toothbrushes, blankets, etc. at the local Police Station which is a donation center. More trucks are heading down to the devastated areas between now and the weekend. Looting seems to be a problem also.
Our hay shed turned upside down. Actually, it was a two car carport with sides, etc. We had 50 round bales in it. Had to relocate them. Insurance adjuster was her Monday, so now we are in the process of dismantling the shed. The wind yesterday hampered the project, but all is secured until we can work on it again. Really not a big deal compared to many others. Take care, everyone
RobinRobinParticipantHi Ethan, I would like to help, but can only think of handing out literature and talking about DAP at our events, with or without the oxen. The oxen always draw folks. This year we did 9 events, one pending due to the hurricane due to hit. I have not attended the outings recently, things get hectic here and my night driving is not as good as it once was, so??????
I do enjoy being a member and will try to help if I can. If you can think of anything else I might be able to do, please let me know.
Best regards to all.
RobinRobinParticipantShe is one lucky little girl. How are Grandpa Howie & Grandma Betty Ann? We don’t hear much about them since they are in the “lower level” of your home.
You can see Frank by bringing up Hamptonburgh Country Festival. I don’t see a way to forward it.
Good luck with the baby Devons!
RobinRobinParticipantI love the v-neck tees, guess you have eliminated them. I just can’t stand the neck on the Tees in the hot summer. Any thing else available, totes, hats, etc.
RobinParticipantWe have a flock of wild turkeys which seem to control the ticks, flies, mosquitoes etc.in check for the past several years . I know this will be a bad year for insects due to the mild winter. So far, frontline, for cats & dogs, ivomectic pour on, for cattle has worked.
I have not found any on humans, so far this year. I usually spay us with off or some other similar product with deet.RobinParticipantSo sorry for your loss. Can we do anything from here on the East Coast? What are your needs? Horse collar size? etc/ The Hudson
Valley Draft Horse Assoc will have an auction in June. If there is anything there that you can use, maybe we can get it and ship it to you. Try to keep you chin up. Congrats on your grandchild. is this the one in England?
Regards,
RobinRobinParticipantWe do a lot of public relation demo’s with my ox, Frank. There is always a lot of public reaction and yes, it does bring tears to my eyes. Frank is a great ox. He is very patient with the little folks and the big folks with so many people wanting to pet him, watch him work, etc. Sometime I let a few folks from the public work him with my supervision. Welcome to the Oxen World. As many of you know, I bought Frank from Howie Van Ord. What a fine in my humble world!!! I still have Jesse along with Jed & Grey. Jed & Grey will be 17 years old this year, semi retired. Jesse is just Jesse….a teenager at 14!!!
Next weekend we are doing a Historical Event in Orange County NY. It will be in Campbell Hall, NY 10916, celebrating the 300th
anniversary of the arrival of Sarah Wells into this area. She was the first white woman settler into this area, vs Native American Indian. This should be an exiting event for us locals. The event is open to the public form 1-5PM, Sat. 5/19 at the Bull Stone House should anyone be interested.RobinParticipantHi Victoria,
The Hudson Valley Draft Horse Assoc. is having their spring plow at Saunderskill Farm, Rt. 209 Accord, NY on April 28. You may want to come and speak to a few folks there. We do have some young members who may be interested in your situation.
Everyone is welcome. We still have vendor space 10×10 available for $35.00. We had a great turn out last year.
Hope all is going well with you. We miss seeing you and your border collie.
You can e-mail me or call 845 294-9016 or reply here.
RobinRobinParticipantI do not go on Facebook. Never have and do not intend to. I get my info from this site or simular others.
Guess I am too old to keep up with the hi-tech stuff.
RobinRobinParticipantJohn, Are you still working as an aircraft mechanic or are you retired? My hubby worked as a mechanic starting in the Air Force in the 1950’s based in Texas for the most part. He still repairs EVERYTHING. He worked here in the East for NY Airways Helicopter in the 1960’s, then American Cyanamid,
Wayferer Ketch for many years, until retirement. Mostly corporate. It would be funny if you knew each other.
We take our oxen to a few very local events each year.RobinParticipantHi Andy & Howie.
Pat looked bored! I plan to visit him in the near future. He is less than 20 miles from me. It will be a busy week around here, lots of
planning for our Spring Plow on April 28.
Had my “boys” hooves trimmed yesterday. Vet visit in the next few weeks, then we will be ready to GO!
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
