We put in 125 taps in in southern NH about two weeks ago when the daytime temp was in the low 50s for almost a week. They were running pretty good then but we barely caught it–just weren’t ready in time.
Now we’re running again and looking towards another week of good sugaring weather.
But, the ground isn’t fully frozen and there isn’t much snow down so who knows how long it’ll last. At the very least we’ll have some syrup for ourselves for the year.
daniel groverKeymasterdaniel groverKeymasterReading this thread, I’m thinking about the I+J forecart I used today at Chuck Cox’s farm. Some of you may know him from Field Days, etc. The forecart is one with an axle that you can move. It’s pretty easy–from standing on the deck, you can move it forward or backward with a crank to adjust the apex and thereby, the tongue weight.
When I saw it my first thought was that it’s a lot of engineering just to be able to adjust your tongue weight. Especially in light of the fact that they’re running d-ring here. Has anyone here ever had the inclination to make a cart with an axle you can move? Is there some crucial functionality it’s serving that i’m missing?

daniel groverKeymasterDonn–awesome to hear that you modified the dump cart–any photos or videos with the changes?
Hope you’re well,
Daniel
daniel groverKeymasterNice little tool, thanks for posting! Where’s he based?
daniel groverKeymasterSuper helpful, thank you!
daniel groverKeymasterErika–a bunch more conversation about that here
daniel groverKeymasterThere’s the website I was looking for! Thanks!
daniel groverKeymasterI’m interested.
daniel groverKeymasterdaniel groverKeymasterNorm sells them but last time I talked with him, he recommended just using a liquid gasket product like this gasket maker. That’s what I’ve used and it works great!
My one hesitation was making the cover difficult to get off but I realized that I don’t really need to take them apart that often anyway. If I do it once a year to take a look, that seems like not such a huge deal.
daniel groverKeymasterMark,
I’m going to get to the bottom of this photo-posting issue. Sorry that this has been a problem for you and many others.
For some reason, I can post photos so if you want to email them to me at daniel.b.grover@gmail.com, I can post them to this thread for you.

daniel groverKeymasterDoes it have a name yet?
daniel groverKeymasterCheck that thing out! Horse powered windrows!
Do you think you might be tempted to make it taller so you can make bigger piles?
