We do a lot of shooting on the farm as we have a clay pigeon shot and Driven Pheasant Shot so our horses (mostly warm bloods, eventers & young stock) get very use too shots and they often use it as a reason to mess around just for fun, we worry more about them getting in the way as they have a habit of it but they general get in the way or go off to the far end of the field, it just like any thing we do with them we reassure them if they not sure general and hope get use to it. we try to have any horse leave our yard bomb prof, Though we don’t do this when we shoting in the field as we have people paying to shot so we chase them back off too the far end of the field, if they are getting in the way. but they do get use to it and soon learn that they have to get out of your way and leave you if you fire a shot as you not going to talk to them, but if you on them they don’t care,
I would love to try and shot from horse back some day.

jeroen I was thinking about the French ones, on another note I find that it is easer picking stones by horse as I don’t have to jump in and out of a cab and I can pick and drive at the same time

we had one for years but it age has not helped but if you install a system get a buffer tank to store excess heat so you have hot water in the morning and it allows the boiler to work better as the water is never let too cool right down ps you can plumb other heat sources in to it as well
some you can light in the summer every 3 days for hot water

a couple of things to consider first
type of operations you want to use it for,
are you going to operate it long side the horses at the same time on the same sites of different sites
the size of blocks you in
type of operation you are doing ie is it a first, 2nd thining or clear fell or is the stand being managed for CCF continous cover forestry
    types of soil
    amount of rain fall
    the terrain
distance between sites as self propled machines can not be driven on a public road (at least here in the uk) and therefor are costly to move from site to site un less you can do it your self but a tractor can be driven on a public road,
the distances to the road side

and is your current tractor up to the job of towing a forwering trailer in the woods
    2wd or 4wd
What is the oil flow (remember manufactures often use the pump capacity and ofthen includes the oil requirement for the power steering) as this will limit you hugely if to small as the crane will perform slowly but you could go down the pto pump route at extra cost
    what hp
    ground clearance
    number of reverse gears
cab space as were you are going to operate the crane from inside the cab or out side
how much is there under the tractor that could be damaged by sticks (how much guarding dose it need)
some even use a reverse drive tractor
and what other things do you use you tractor for

but the benefit of one is limited for horse operations to more secondary extraction to the road side operations, but horse drawn one you have less tided up in tractors and you all ready have the motive power on site so the you can park it up when not needed and they are about the same cost as a forwarding trailer but you have not got the extra cost of a tractor let alone running it.

thanks Simon, i’ve been looking at everything i can to do with the noriker(it takes some searching to find anything!)so i’m very interested in your sourcing them.i like the fact that foals only come from strictly working mares and stallions unlike our poor shires selected from mares and stallions with the longest legs and the softest feather!
which type would you be looking at?
do you have an idea of prices, age and stage of training that you could source, any info would be greatly appreciated.
    many thanks jon

i total agree about breading from good working stock, people were put in mares in foal because they were no good at anything else, but this is less of a problem now since the recession, but why did they even think they produce good stock from them , but truing to find good stock is not easy, i am and i trying to find something nice for forestry work to, iam condering a irsh draft X cob but only as i could probally pick up one for next to nothing but prefer the north swedish

carl i am in a similar situation, as i am looking for a tractor based forwarder for our farm but was going to have to get some one in with a horse for some of our blocks anyway, but picked up a kombi drag and arch so will get a horse as well as it has other benefits as well, but still need to get a forwarder but now not sure what to get. as they need to complement each other, and have capacity for transporting timber back to the yard from small blocks but still work in the woods
